What to do when you feel low in the morning
On a heavy morning the hard part is not the doing. It is deciding what the doing should be. So make the decision smaller than the feeling.
Name the weather in one word. Do four minutes of slow movement without leaving the room. Then say one true, unflattering-but-kind sentence about yourself out loud. That is the whole morning. Anything else is extra.
A low morning is a decision problem
Doing small, concrete things when you feel low is one of the best-studied approaches to low mood — that is the behavioural-activation literature, and it works in the other direction from how it feels: the action comes first and the motivation, if it comes, arrives after. The obstacle is that a low morning is exactly when picking the action costs the most.
The smallest possible morning
You can do all of this before you have decided anything about the day.
- Say the weather out loud in one word: heavy, grey, mixed, clearing, bright. Nothing follows it. No because.
- Four minutes of slow movement, lying down or in a chair if that is what today allows. Child's pose, cat-cow, one side bend. Move inside a pain-free range.
- Sit up. Three slow breaths where the out-breath is longer than the in-breath.
- Say one sentence you actually believe about yourself. Out loud, even quietly. "I keep my word" beats "I am amazing" on a heavy morning, because you will believe it.
Check yourself: Did the morning get smaller, or did you just add another thing you are behind on?
Do
- Move before you decide anything
- Keep the sentence true rather than flattering
- Let rest count as showing up
- Let a skipped day be information
Skip
- Rebuilding your whole routine before breakfast
- Waiting to feel like it
- Scrolling for a better plan
- Owing yourself anything for yesterday

Still-in-Bed Stretch · 4 min
Four slow shapes you can do before your feet touch the floor. Every step shows its safety note, and the range is yours.
Name the Weather Inside · 2 min
Put one word on the feeling and stop there. Naming a feeling is a smaller ask than explaining it, and it is where the rest of the morning gets easier.
Serai picks the pair from your check-in, your movement flags and the time you have. This is the shape of it, not a fixed rule.
Limit: Serai is a self-care and educational tool, not medical or mental health care. It does not diagnose anything. If low mornings are becoming most mornings, or you are thinking about harming yourself, contact a qualified professional or a crisis line — the app keeps its list of resources one tap away, outside the paywall.
