WOUND-UP MORNINGS

Three gentle yoga poses for an anxious morning

This is not a flow, a class or a challenge. It is three shapes and a long exhale, done slowly enough that your breath can follow.

Short answer

Child's pose for a minute, cat-cow for ninety seconds, one seated side bend each way. Breathe out longer than you breathe in throughout. Stop at any point that feels sharp, hot or numb.

WHAT IS GOING ON

Slow movement and slow breath, together

Reviews of yoga for low mood report small to moderate improvements, with the caveat that trials vary widely in what they call yoga. Slow, paced breathing is separately associated with a shift toward calmer autonomic activity. Neither of those is a promise for your Tuesday. What is reliably true is more boring: three known shapes remove the decision, and a longer exhale is something you can do while your head is still loud.

Shoulders arrive firstYou notice the tension in your neck and jaw before you notice the thought.
Short, high breathThe breath sits in the chest and never quite finishes.
Fast startsA vigorous workout sounds right and then feels worse an hour later.
4 MIN · 3 SHAPES

Three-pose unfold

Slower than feels productive. That is the point.

  1. Child's pose, 60 seconds. Knees wide, forehead down or on a cushion. Breathe into the back of the ribs.
  2. Cat-cow, 90 seconds. Let the spine move at the speed of the breath, not the other way around.
  3. Seated side bend, 45 seconds each side. Reach long instead of far.
  4. Sit still for 30 seconds and make the out-breath twice as long as the in-breath. Five rounds.

Check yourself: Is the breath longer than when you started, or are you performing calm at speed?

Do

  • Use a cushion under knees, hips or forehead
  • Keep the range pain-free
  • Let the exhale set the pace
  • Stop and switch to breath alone if anything is sharp

Skip

  • Pushing into a stretch to feel it working
  • Holding the breath at the top of a pose
  • Turning it into a workout
  • Doing it on a hard floor with sore knees

What Serai would suggest

Body

Three-Pose Unfold · 4 min

The three shapes above, timed, with contraindication swaps if you have flagged back, knee or pregnancy. Serai will offer a side-lying version instead when it should.

Mind

Self-Compassion Break · 3 min

Three lines said out loud: this is hard, hard is human, here is what I need. Brief self-compassion practices are associated with moderate improvements in mood and worry across 27 randomised trials.

Serai picks the pair from your check-in, your movement flags and the time you have. This is the shape of it, not a fixed rule.

Limit: If you are pregnant, recovering from an injury, or have back, knee or wrist problems, choose the seated or side-lying version and move within a pain-free range. Serai is a self-care and educational tool, not medical or mental health care, and it does not diagnose anything. Persistent pain is a reason to see a clinician.

BEFORE LAUNCH

Serai opens in November.
